I live in Killingworth and have just bought a 16kg kettlebell – Is this like a local club ? or can you advise me on any courses in the area to improve technicque or exercises. Cheers

    Hey mate, yea the …
Hey mate, yea the stardard starteer kettlebells for men are 16 kg and 24 kg’s dont buy a 8 for your self its pointless but i do advise you to eather study the movement closely before you start or go see someone who knows the techniques before you start lifting randomly. I think the 35lb is a good start though def worth the money. I start with 8 kg just because im an instructore and i have that advantage of having many lying around but for purchase i would go the 16 for sure mate!

    Hey toko,

    Hey toko,
I hear a lot of people say 35lbs is a good place to start for an average size man. I’m 6’1″ 185lbs. I weight train w/ free weights 4 times per week but usually lift light weight, more reps. I do have slight lower back pain from breaking my tailbone a few times. So based on that, do you think 35lbs would be a good intro into kettlebell training? I’d rather play it safe then sorry. I know you said 8kg, but 18lbs seems a bit light and they’re slightly expensive too.
    Thanks man

    Mate your right not …
Mate your right not sure what i was on when i wrote my comment because it didnt come out the way i wanted it to. Obviously if functional strength gains are your goals then the heavier ones are the right solution what i meant to say was that i start everyone on 8kgs untill they get the techniques right i dont load them up on snatches or swings untill i see they have correct technique and are not going to blow out their backs.

    Kettles are a TOOL, …
Kettles are a TOOL, so your light kettlebell statement is not a prescription for all. What if a guy wanted to do 10 sets of snatches with the 106lbs? are you going to tell him he is doing it wrong? vs 10 sets of 50 snatches with the 35lbs? simply different types of workouts working different energy systems.

One mistake alot of people do is they tend to start to heavy with Kettles. Youll notice those guys are well trained in kettles and they are using 16kg for alot of thei exercises. Kettles are more about muscular endurance and power so light with high explosive reps is the way to go. I start all beginers on 8kg untill the technique is right then step up 4 kg at a time Ive got a couple girls on 12kg with out stopping once for 20 mins (constant movement with out droping)
