Starting out with kettlebells?

I’d like to start working out with kettlebells, but I’m unsure of which weight to start with. I’m a male, 26 yrs old, 6′1, 260 lbs. I have a decently muscular frame but am quite chubby around the midsection. I’d venture to say that I’m in fair shape, could be worse, could be a lot better. I’ve heard that most men start with a 35 lb kettlebell. Also, is it good to use two kettlebells for a workout or should I start with one? I just know they can get pretty pricey. THANKS!!

you weight twice as much as me.

See if you can find a local gym or store that has a few kettlebells available for sale. I’ve found them locally at Play It Again Sports. Try the 16kg, 20kg, and 24kg sizes. Whichever one is a bit of a challenge without being impossible is what you should do. I’m a bit lighter (185lbs), also 26, and fairly fit. I quickly outgrew a 35lb/16kg kettlebell for many of the core kettlebell exercises, and adding a 24kg became an immediate priority (partly because I want to work up to the RKC certification exercises being very doable, if not easy). So for you 20-24kg would be my first inclination, but worth testing before you buy. - Roy
