Kettlebells are anything but a novelty. Original poster, do not listen to this person who obviously knows nothing. Kettlebells have been used in Russia for well over a century. These are the implements that strongmen the world over have used to become what they are...stronger!
They may cost a little more, but the number of exercises possible with these are staggering. Pretty much whatever you can do with a dumbbell, you can do with a kettlebell PLUS there is more that you can do with a Kettlebell than a dumbbell. Try tying a rope to your dumbbell and swinging it around your body to strengthen your core and shoulders...don't trust that knot? Neither would I. But a Kettlebell, on the other hand is excellent for such a workout routine (that is just one example).
Kettlebells are EXACTLY for strength and explosiveness. They are NOT designed for bodybuilding (the exercises any how). They are specifically for explosive strength.
Further, they are designed for LARGE muscle strengthening and they are designed for WHOLE body workout while incorporating cardio in the workout. Seriously, if you are serious about STRENGTH and FUNCTION...and not merely appearance...Kettlebells are a great choice..not the only choice, but a GREAT choice. (BTW there are cheaper kettlebells than DD atm I believe...only problem is shipping!)
Daring & Luck!

They're unflexible and mostly a waste. Obviously they're more difficult to lift than ordinary dumbbells but so are lots of objects. It's mostly a marketing scheme by the likes of Dragondoor and people of that sort who want to make up a niche in the equipment market.

Dumbbell weights are more adaptable, and they're typically cheaper and easier to store, and Olympic weightlifters use them rather than kettlebells. That should probably be enough for you. Mostly kettlebells are just a big hassle, although they're amusing for some novelty for a while.
