Kettlebell Workouts? Love them? Hate them?

I’m thinking about joining a local class. Please tell me what you really like about this particular type of workout, and what you don’t really like about it?

Hi Amy,

Kettlebells are an incredibly versatile fitness tool. They are highly portable and can be utilized for many different training goals including fat loss, strength endurance, limit strength, everyday fitness, rehabilitation, and joint strengthening.

A lot of the exercises that utilize kettlebells are not really new to fitness, but they do utilize several linked muscle groups developing strength for everyday movements. i.e. bending and lifting objects, lifting objects overhead, as opposed to traditional bodybuilding exercises. (When is the last time you did curls in your everyday life?)

Because you utilize several big muscle groups in each exercise, you can get a full body workout in a minimal amount of time. In 20 minutes, I can put together a workout that will leave you thoroughly worked out.

Portability. You can take your kettlebell with you when you travel. (I bungee cord mine in my 53lb in my trunk when I go on multi-day car trips) You can take it outside and workout out in the fresh air and grass. If you live in an apartment setting, it takes very space to store.

You only need 1 or 2 for a great fitness program. You can own only one and setup your program to utilize it very effectively. You may eventually want 2 different sizes or doubles, but you can get 90% of a great program with just one.

They are great for women. There are a lot of lower body exercises that are ballistic in nature, meaning you’re doing high reps with a weight, which will give you fat loss and toning in the same exercise. The exercises that utilize kbs link muscles groups which include the hips, butt, and hamstrings. Kettlebells are great for toning that area.

I guess you can say I love them.. ;-)

Do kettlebell workouts actually build muscle.?

I’m thinking about using one and I’ve wondered what it helps with if anything.

yes , but not in body building sense .

I actually prefer kb`s than body building . But everybody got his own goals and way to get there .
Choose the tool according to your goal .

Working Out With My Kettlebells?

For A long time now i had been working out with my kettlebells and really seeing results. I think that they are fantastic and i really enjoy the workout. the only trouble is, is that for some reason my knees have really been affected by the workout (i started with a 5kg and now are on a 8kg kettlebell). I really want to know why my knees would be feeling that way, i know that i am overweight and with my workouts i have been losing weight, which is great.

What should i do . recently i have just stopped using the kettlebell so that my knees can feel normal again. I really do want to get back with my kettlebells, i really miss them,

Will this feeling with my knees disappear once i have lost the weight or is it something that i will always suffer with.

i really would appreciate your help in this.

thanks in advance

gina.

I never heard of kettle bells before, but went on youtube to see what it is about and it looks like a pretty good workout. Obviously the stress on the knees is high and you stumbled into something that we call training volume. When you start training anything that you were not used to, articulations and ligaments need to adapt and that can take some time. Just like running, you can’t go from 0 miles a week to 50 miles a week in less than 6 month and same for 50 miles to 100 miles a week.

So take it easy and stop if you feel pain. Joint injuries are very hard to heal from so do not overstress them. Meanwhile, do some cross training, like swimming, biking or elliptic, which is easier on the knees and you will still lose weight if you train at enough intensity. When you get back to it, progress slower from your 5kg weight. Also watch your form especially when you get tired. Bad form can too lead to injuries.
