looking into kettlebell training and need thoughts?

Im not a gym buff, but I work out at least twice a week usually. My asthma is a pain for me in the colder months so I bulk during that time rather than focus on cardio. Im not always able to make it to the gym due to my uni studies at the moment, and I was planning on investing in some training equipment for evenings when travelling there and back cant be done. I hear kettlebells are good, but I am uncertain about how i select the weight of the bell I am going to purchase. They seem to start quite light, is there a reason for this? should I be looking into a heavy bell if I plan on bulking up? What would be good exercises with a bell to incorporate into my workouts (I focus on chest, shoulders, back, core, arms a lot of the time, since I get my leg definition and strength from my running mostly)

Im looking for size at the moment

Yes kettlebells are effective. To build muscle, use a heavier kettlebell and perform fewer repetitions of an exercise each set. Use muscular effort to raise and lower the weight. To use a kettlebell to improve muscular endurance in your arms, use about 50 percent of the weight you can lift, perform 10 to 15 reps and perform the reps faster.

The heavier the kettlebell, the more muscle you are likely to build — if you can perform the exercise. You may be able to do deadlifts with a very heavy kettlebell but not triceps extensions, which work weaker muscles. Before you buy a kettlebell, make sure you can use it to perform all of the exercises you want to do with it.

What size kettlebell is right for me?

Question by tall cans: What size kettlebell is right for me?
I am looking to get in to kettlebell training but, I am not sure what size to buy. I recently stopped body building because, I was tired of the daily same ol’ same ol’. I am 6’2″ and was 240lbs, since I stopped lifting in October I have slimmed down to a comfortable 195lbs, I still have some of my strength, but not all of it. I purchased a kettlebell the other day a 16kg one and when I use it to workout its difficult but not challenging, and now everything that I read tells me that I should have gotten a 20 or 24kg one. I plan on using it very frequently, and don’t want to have to buy a new kettlebell in the next month cause they aren’t cheap. So I am wondering if i should pick up a 20kg or stick with the 16kg? My goal is to lose fat and tone up. Any suggestions will be great thanks.

Well , since you `re experienced body builder , im afraid that you are going to grow thru the 16 kg bell rather fast . Like you said it might be difficult but not challenging . Everything seems difficult in the beginning . Nevertheless start with 16 kg was good idea , but eventually , if you decide to stay with kettlebells , im afraid that you will have to invest in heavier ones .

have you considered plate loaded kettle handles , like for example kettlestack .

When i`ve started with kettlebells few years ago , and seeing how expensive they are , i went with kettlestack loadable up to 70 lbs ( 32 kg ) . For me it was right thing to do , i went thru 16 to 20 to 25 in year and half for the price of 50 $ . Then i ordered second one . Now im working on 32 kg and saving money to buy a true bell .

Kettlebells are a good exercise, you should do it at least 3 times a week to see results, and make sure you get a days rest between each session.
